Presentation

The Brazilian Institute for Criminal Sciences – IBCCRIM - is an entity of social relevance, a human´s right supporter, a non - governamental and non -profitable organization. It´s purpose is to encourage the development of the Criminal Sciences all over the country, emphasizing the absolute respect for the fundamental principles, rights and guarantees structured in Brazilian Constitution.

Being part of IBCCRIM – Do you know what it means?

In action since 1992 as a response for the increase of the penal system coersion, IBCCRIM is the result of the active and voluntary participation of its collaborators that, for cherishing the same ideals, are, tirelessly, in constant dedication to the activities mostly directed to the rights of the minorities and the excluded citizens, trying to guarantee a minimal dignity to the human being.

By accomplishing its objectives and following its Statute, IBCCRIM produces innovatory legal knowledge for an interdisciplinary Criminal Science. That’s why, believing in a society where the Criminal Law can be applied and executed without distinctions, we invite you to experience the activities of IBCCRIM and, by joining the other associates from all over the country and world, cooperate to the effective accomplishment of the Law-based Social Democratic State.

Library and Video Library

Regarded as the most up-to-dated Latin-American inventory of themes concerning the Criminal Sciences, the IBCCRIM Library gathers books and documents related to Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Criminal Policy, Criminology, Bioethics, Forensic Sciences, Criminal Sociology and Human Rights, among other correlated branches. It provides to the IBCCRIM members thousands of bibliographical references and videos from lectures, courses and seminars; it also offers full assistance for researchers in Law, Sociology, Psychology, Psychiatry, Anthropology as well as to journalists, public servants, politicians, Human Rights activists, NGO representatives etc. Every piece of research may be requested through the IBCCRIM website, e-mail, telephone or fax. Personally, the researcher  can enjoy a quiet and pleasant reading room.

Bulletin IBCCRIM 

Within Scientific Production, the Bulletin stands out for being a consolidated publication that contains extremely precise information. Distributed monthly, it is composed of articles that scrutinize various subjects in the areas of the Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Criminology, Criminal Policy, Bioethics, among others. It is also known for the collection of headnotes of the decisions of the main Brazilian courts, revealing to be a fundamental tool of the freedom of speech.

Partnership, international Networking and OLAPOC

The Department of Partnership and International Relations and OLAPOC - Latin-American Observatory of Criminal Policy – aims are to expand the Institute in international ambit. They are promoting foreign exchanges and cooperation with several kinds of entities and sectors, both nationally and internationally. Current partners include the Law School of the University of Coimbra in Portugal, the Max Planck’s Institute and the Konrad Adenauer’s Foundation in Germany, among others.

Courses and Events 

IBCCRIM motivates and disseminates courses and events with qualified debates among national and international specialists on themes such as Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Criminology, Sociology and Criminal Policy throughout Brazil. The objective of IBCCRIM is to promote a more extensive integration between the ones interested in Criminal Sciences. The institution promotes partnerships of scientific-cultural nature with entities in the whole country and abroad, such as the Course of Masters degree in International Economic Criminal Law carried out in cooperation with the Institute of Economical and European Criminal Law (IDPEE) of the University of Coimbra.

Scientific Initiation Lab

IBCCRIM also offers the Criminal Science Lab, a course directed to senior students of Law Schools. It is a 1-year course which is divided into four subjects: Criminal Law, Criminal Action, Criminology and Criminal Policy. With dynamic and interactive classes, the students are motivated to analyse up-to-dated situations on Criminal Sciences supported by social and human perspectives. The Lab intents are to develop graduation students´critical sense and lead them to increase their scientific knowledge and intellectual faculties.

Study Meeting and Debates

The IBCCRIM associates can attend monthly debates and study meetings. These are presentations where updated social themes are explained and debated . The focus is usually the Criminal Sciences and applications are free and available in IBCCRIM website. Because these events have a limited number of participants, they are recorded and catalogued in our vídeo library.

Monograph Collection

The Monograph Collection is composed by renowned  studies and is delivered freely to all IBCCRIM associates. They are a series of books about interdisciplinary academic researches and essays on various topics from different areas of Criminal Science. Every year, IBCCRIM promotes a Monograph Contest and releases the winner work in its International Meeting.

Research Board

Researchers from different fields of human scientific knowledge collaborate in the research board, which provides its interdisciplinary approach to Criminal Sciences. The board is notable for its own empirical studies, consultancy for alien projects and partnership with both private and public entities concerning issues as Public Security, Criminal Justice management, access to Justice and advocacy of human rights. Furthermore, it has recently launched in 2007 its course on Social Research into Criminal Justice, available for students and professionals interested in Criminal Justice Administration issues and empirical research methods.

Postgraduate Course

The IBCCRIM postgraduate course in Criminology has the Ministry of Public Instruction recognition and is held by highly qualified teaching staff with renowned teachers from Criminal Sciences. The same excellence pattern from which all the IBCCRIM activities have been known for can be found in this new achievement.

RBCCRIM (Brazilian Institute for Criminal Sciences Journal)

The IBCCRIM Journal is a twice-monthly publication in partnership with Revista dos Tribunais publishing house. Taking pluralist approach into consideration, it presents studies relating legal theory with various sciences, such as Criminology, Criminal Policy, Bioethics, Anthropology, Sociology, Psychiatry, Psychology, Legal Medicine, Penitentiary Law. Authorized repository for precedent concerning Brazilian Courts, the Journal also has the national evaluation -A and international –B in Law, and national - A in Anthropology, Archeology, Political Sciences, Geography, History and Sociology, by the QUALIS-CAPES system.

International Meeting

National reference for those who embraced Criminal Sciences the International Meeting is a scientific event that has taken place for more than thirteen years, and has gathered about a thousand people from every part of the country. During the four days of the event, both national and international renowned professors debate polemic present issues.

IBCCRIM Website

Developed from a framework that facilitates the navigation from both professionals and academic researchers, the IBCCRIM Website www.ibccrim.org.br is updated on a daily basis. Thus the site publicizes national and international news coming from the main newspapers, journals and sites, articles, pieces of legislation (both national and international) and selected legal decisions. Furthermore it contains many sections like Bulletin (since its firts issue), Journal (the indexes), Monograph (covers and abstracts), Library (on-line research), Courses and Events (full coverage), Research (comprises some departmens like Legislative studies and projects, History Commission etc.), among others. To the registered users the website sends weekly eletronic informs with the main news and library informs about recent acquisitions. Through the Website members can also access videos and other didactic materials.

IBCCRIM on-line Fórum

Every Wednesday from 11h to 12h (Brasília time) on the site www.ibccrim.org.br, associates have a space for scientific and academic debate with some of the greatest Brazilian specialists in Criminal Science. Themes are scheduled in advance and the chats have the IBCCRIM mediation. Notes of each chatting section is provided afterwards in the site.

IBCCRIM TV

Through the website www.ibccrim.org.br , IBCCRIM TV is available at any time and place according to your convenience, so that associates can watch all its programs.
The show “Faces da Violência” has as its main goal to debate violence and all its different perspectives. It analyses common sense thoughts and discusses the structural causes of violence, giving suggestions on how to transform it in our society.
“Diálogos IBCCRIM” is a series of programs that discuss specific themes of Criminal Sciences presented by a specialist with the participation of professors and other areas researchers.

A National Institute with Regional Representation

IBCCRIM is a national institute, located in São Paulo, Brazil, and with representatives in all regions of the country, that take active participation in all Criminal Science activities in Brazilian states. The institute representatives are university professors, lawyers, journalists and entity members, whose task is to promote interaction with the associates that live distant from the central office, but still desire to participate actively and make use of the institution’s benefits. Known as regional coordinators, their purpose is to facilitate the access of the associates into the IBCCRIM and their mission is to spread ideas and scientific contents, to organize events and courses and to facilitate the interchange of studies and researches, integrating all states of the country.
